| ^Not saying piracy isn't justified so much in those cases. And I know there's some good things to be said for piracy in a lot of cases. I just feel there's a lot of gray.
For example, if I pirate a game on 1st day of launch, then buy it half a year later when it's 75% off on a steam sale, that's having your cake and eating it too. The premium of playing a game on first day comes with the price of paying full price generally. This is one point I feel a lot of piracy isn't really justified yet many people use the excuse.
On the other end, it's true that said person may have never bought the game at all if they hadn't played it.
And in the end, I still feel that far more fit into neither, and just pirate because they can, and will never buy the game.
It really just depends. I'll be the first to admit I pirated a ton of games a few years back, when I really didn't have money at all. Now I find it hard to justify most of the time, because there are so many enjoyable games that are ridiculously cheap. I mean, Terraria, I paid what? 5$ for, and put easily 160+ hours into it. (Thank god Minecraft isn't on steam and doesn't keep track of play time)

| I am too poor to afford anything. But I don't go around pirating games left and right. If anything, it's when I want to play some old game that I don't have and there's no real point to buying it. If it's anything else, 99% of the time, the game comes from a friend and sometimes I don't even know I'm pirating in the first place.
It's hard to say I actually feel bad for pirating most of the time though. I've played Terraria a lot and never bought it, and probably won't only because they decided to stop updating it.

This. (or things like Touhou/Rosenkreuzstilette that are a pain in the ass to get; I still plan on buying hard copies of both RKS games when I have spare cash though)

| pricedrop issue is valid, but actually some people may wait for it because of pricing of games nowadays. i mean, 60 € for the trash they throw at you ? oh come on, publishers, get real. like you i also am happier with low cost games at this point in time. my ipod is propably at the same level of time consumption gaming wise as my desktop pc is right now. alone infinity blade kept me busy for ridiculous amounts of time (and you can play it anywhere, too) - for under 2 € meanwhile on a desktop PC i could get a game of similar quality for 60 ... lets say 30 to 40 € because of its age ... and get a measly 20 hours playtime out of it (not to mention it would propably be pisseasy, too) mfw many of the old titles i played in the 90´s on pc are nowadays available for the ipod - and sadly they even beat many of the newer tripple A trash, what has this industry come down to. i remember looking forward to operation flashpoint: dragon rising as an official follow up to the original operation flashpoint. sadly they managed to turn a military simulation into a generic console shooter with heavy limitations. a game suited for the newer generation of gamers, one i am not a part of. - Quote :
- there's no real point to buying it.
this is something i can not agree with. if you deem the game worthy its money, the point of buying it would be to support the devs. the only valid reason so that there wouldnt be a point of buying it would be that the developer studio no longer exists. on a sidenote: the only pirated game i played in the last couple of YEARS was age of wonders: shadow magic so its not like im actually running around pirating "left and right" even with my opinion that pirating isnt necessary a bad thing, just saying ;D

| I don't pirate many games nowadays because 99% of everything that comes out is garbage not even worth the electricity and/or fucking around with getting it to work if there's some silly DRM involved.
Last game I pirated was Borderlands 2. More like Borderlands 1.5. Except it's actually worse than the original in some regards. I pity the fool who paid money for this. And speaking of paying money, I spent a total of 37,69 Euro buying video games last year (not counting kickstarter). Truly I am the cancer killing video games by not spending money.
E: oh wait, I also bought NA Tera on launch cause I'm a fucking idiot.

| I tried the Russian game Gunswords that is still in beta. Don't bother with that one. They get reviewers to all log in on the same day so they have people to play with. Once the reviewers have posted their reviews, the server is back to 0 inhabitants.. in a game where you can only battle other players. It's totally dead.
I tried Atlantica Online and didn't get past the character creation screen because of weird graphical glitches. Then, I remembered that it was being run by Nexon and promptly spent the next half of an hour cleaning that crap off of my HDD.
I tried Totem Online, but they're as gay as the people making Mechwarrior Tactics.. as in, it's widescreen or GTFO. Sure, you can hold ctrl and scroll your mouse wheel to zoom out.. or go to View in your browser menu and zoom out.. but then the extremities of the screen, and the buttons located there that you need to press, are clipped off into oblivion.
I considered Guild Wars 2, until I read several posts on the net of people being banned just for saying the word faggot in the game.. and one guy got banned for naming himself Adolf Critler. I don't care how fun the game may or may not be; I won't patronize any game with that level of wussification.
I downloaded Wakfu and made a character.. but, now I've got a headache, so, I'll try that one later. Being affiliated with Square / Eenix is a plus.. but not letting people write the word god in their profile name is a huge red flag that might mean a fascist set of nanny-state rules to protect the children and those that are easily butt-hurt.

I figured someone would comment on this. I did say old games, right? As in, games old enough that buying them wouldn't even support the devs at all. I'd be buying from places online, local gaming stores, etc. Not to mention some of them have ridiculous prices of $100+ just because of how rare they are. Hi EarthBound. ;_;Just realized I didn't even read your last sentence. I guess that'd be a reason too. lol

I've spent around $50 dollars in video games. - Spoiler:
in 24 years
Try to guess the games. ------------------------ And I've never seen some of my favorite games ever in any shelf in this place (Fallout 2, Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Dawn of War 1, Guilty Gear XX...) and the rest's been out of print for more than a decade (Quake 2, Star Wars Racer, Tony Hawk 2, Age of Empires 2, Homeworld).

i can still find homeworld from time to time in the cheap-software corners. its also one of the games i actually have bought multiple times (because homeworld+homeworl:cataclysm was cheaper then buying homeworld:cataclysm alone) that being said, you like some major great games, sir

I tried Wakfu back when it was in beta, and it looked like it had at least some potential. Then they released the game as "free2play" yet you can't get passed the tutorial without paying a monthly subscription. I don't know if this has changed since then. It looked like it could've been what was essentially FFT style combat online, where you only control one character.

They're still locking out the entire game for free players, other than the starter areas and your nation. So, the game isn't free to play; it's just a free trial for a subscription game. That's a dirty trick and I hope the developers (slowly) die in a fire. I was really hoping to find an online tactical / strategy game that isn't that RTS crap. I despise RTS and have ever since I rented Command and Conquer for the PS1 from Blockbuster Video back in the mid 90s. I want something like Ogre Tactics / Final Fantasy Tactics / Front Mission. Those games are like the old hex'd out Battletech that I used to play on tabletops so long ago.. (or Warhammer.. that game was even more fun on a tabletop.. although it was infinitely more expensive.) It seems like online games only fall into a few categories these days: - super high system requirement shooters
- RTS
- mmorpgs with tiny, tiny text and way too much mouse clicking
- crappy browser games
- driving simulators
I just can't, for the life of me, find something interesting and fun to play online.

I just can't, for the life of me, find something interesting and fun to play online. Looks like someone hasn't figured out the magical realm of online fighters... Try these out if you haven't: Lost Saga and Getamped2. They're not bad. May not precisely match your tastes, but they're pretty good (I'm gonna be a nice guy and tell you that Getamped2 is made by Cyber$tep, so if that's a turn-off, then go ahead and not play the game. It's pretty fun though, a lot better than Cosmicbreak, and it's even more active. The best part is that you can get through the entire game w/o spending a cent. If you can deal w/ Cyber$tep developing it though, it's pretty good.).

If you're worried about them being too complicated, there's no need to worry (Well...not until combos are involved.). Both games only have 3-4 main buttons and the arrow keys mapped to them. They do have depth, though, and they're pretty fun too.

I found a new online game that's like Final Fantasy Tactics / Tactics Ogre / Disgaea and going into closed beta soon. The only downside: it's a fucking browser game. (Seriously, are developers so god damned lazy these days that they can't make a standalone game, and have to rely on being in a browser window?
