It's randomized whether they're on your team or against.

According to the Cosmic League website, only groups of up to 3 players can enter the matching system as a team. If the group has more than that total, they'll all be split up randomly like Astral said.

Nah, wasn't running a group larger than 3. Kinda sucks that there's no sure way to team up with a friend, well I guess that does prevent stomps from happening as often though.

Groups seem to be like mini-guilds (that you may be able to be in multiple of) that persist beyond logging off, so that may mean that only three in a group are guaranteed to be in the same match.  There does not seem to be any attempt to have a group on the same team; in fact, I'm not certain I've ever had my whole group on the same team (though sometimes it was 3 people instead of two).

I don't know how much of a difference it makes on not-low settings, but on the lowest settings, I go from 20-25 FPS to 1 FPS when I look in the direction of the sun in the lobby (regardless of whether I can see it), so maybe try seeing if your FPS significantly changes when you look in certain directions (including upwards).
If the sun is really notably affecting people that approach 60 FPS, they really need to make an option to turn off its lag-inducing effects.

It also seems that you may have a dual core GPU (if that's the proper term) and the game is only using one core, just like it seems to only use one CPU core.

Heres performance on a core 2 quad with a radeon 5450 on max settings... The performance between the systems should not be comparable.
