I honestly feel that the way to get into a girl's pants is to be friendly to her. Although you don't want to be stuck in the friendzone forever(I got stuck there with the first and second girls I crushed on, and it sucks so much), I think going that way at first is the best way to do it tbh.
You can't just come straight out and say "I like you. Wanna go out with me?" because that's odd and creepy. You have to get to know someone first, feel them out and try to see if there's potential before you ask her out. That's how I worked it with my friend/current love interest, and we got to know each other and stuff like that, and I honestly think it worked out for the best. After all, I'm leaving for college this year and she's two years younger than I am, so going out with her might fuck this shit up. You want good, lasting relationships.

Anyway, enough about my situation...
Be yourself, but if you're eccentrically geeky or foolish, don't show it too much.
Find something else to talk about if you have one-dimensional interests. I have a friend who, a few years ago, would only talk about baseball at least 60-70% of the time, and people got really tired of it. Be varied in your interests so you can keep a good conversation going.

Another problem: don't talk TOO much. A good conversation can go bad if you talk for hours on end, because both of you just eventually get really, REALLY bored. If your conversation's been going on for more than an hour and a half(or even an hour, really), you need to end it nicely before the above happens, unless of course both your interest levels haven't declined at all in the past hour or so.

And don't be sad or angry if this doesn't work out(tough to remember if it actually doesn't, though; I remember being really broken up because I couldn't take my friend out to my prom). You'll find someone.

Never tried this but maybe you could practice with dating sims.
