Chuks my clan leader who happens to have a language barrier, he should try to learn the language, but you guys shouldn't go off on him with stuff like "SPEAK AMERICAN!". Honestly I think we're both blowing this way out of proportion. This a freaking anime game fan forum, not a scientific journal or something!

English isn't an easy language to learn, I get that, especially with all the rules and spelling variations we have and break. However, effort is generally appreciated, and once you start putting effort into something, it's rather hard to STOP putting effort into it. Things like punctuation and unconscious proof-reading are especially noticeable after someone starts to put in effort during their writing. I do it all the time, actually. x__x; And I get that this is the internet, and that all this shit isn't really mandatory (well, it kind of is in the forums rules iirc), but it's a lot easier to read and understand if it's properly written.

It's not that he doesn't "SPEAK AMERICAN," because honestly, I'm use to thinking differently about how words are spelt and stuff, as I've spent the last...8 years of my life? Observing how others speak English through storywriting, forum-speak, IM-chat, and just random interactions. I use to be a huge nazi about all this shit, yeah, and right now I probably seem like I'm going batshit crazy over all this, but really, it's that he just doesn't give any effort at all in his posts.

I read a lot, especially over the internet. Primarily because, hey, the internet is like one giant book with an almost endless amount of material for me to read. And something I've noticed, especially with myself, is that after someone actually start to put effort into their writing, they start to do it in other places, too. I use to be a really shit writer. I had horrible spelling, grammar, punctuation, you name it. I was aggressive to people who tried to correct me, and I refused to accept that I made my own problems. Sort of like Chuky, except I was like 12 at the time. But then I started to actually do things like proofread, and everything became better over time. And people stopped bitching, which was nice.

From my perspective, as someone who spends a good thirty seconds or so proofreading my forum posts so I don't come off as lazy (especially since I have firefox, which checks my spelling anyway :\ ), it really bothers me just how little effort he doesn't put into it. Like, look at his last post. There are so many typos, and he obviously doesn't care enough to just go and fix them. Sure, I get that everyone makes mistakes and all, but is it really that much effort to correct any mistypings before you hit the send button? Or, hell, hit the edit button. Takes like, what, a minute at most to do all that stuff? And he probably just hits the enter button, feels good about himself because he's high off his own ego, and doesn't give a shit. And that bothers me, primarily because I see a junior writer who's super aggressive and egotistical and refuses to see its their own fault for their errors. And that's unfortunately a common, if irrational, response.

I don't care if he uses chat lingo (even though it really isn't that much effort to type out two more letters if you can go "hahahahahah" every time you post), or acronyms or stuff like that, because hey, this is the internet. The thing that bothers me is that he doesn't bother following up with what he posts with simple crap like punctuation, proof-reading, or any other basic skill that helps enable clearer communication. The sheer lack of follow-up effort he puts into communicating just annoys me. It's not hard to put forth the effort once you start to actually try.

I can read clear writing that actually had effort put into it a lot faster and more efficiently than poorly-written 30-second posts. I just have to skim clear writing to get the idea of what they're saying, usually, and if I want to pick out specific details, I can. With poor writing, I have to re-read it more times than I would have to if I was actually reading something like a scientific journal, which is frustrating when I'm trying to understand the point he's making. Sure, I'm use to reading normal shit-effort posts and fics on the internet, but Chuky doesn't even bother. And he refuses to even consider that hey, you might want to kick up the effort, just insists that we're kids or idiots. Which is rather amusing, since he tends to act more childish and illogical about it than the people bringing up the point.

Like I said, there are numerous reasons why this whole thing bothers me. The primary reason is "hey, I can't read what you're saying easily, can you try to be clearer?", but considering he's so far in denial, I kinda feel like raging. He's not helping anyone, especially not himself, if he doesn't lose this denial stuff he's going through. This is the internet, sure, but if people ask for you to just try and put more effort into it, is it really that much of a pain in the ass to do it? ._. I get that people like to be dicks on the internet, too, but c'mon.

Suki reviews people's fictions for fun. Obviously, this has been both helpful in some ways, and detrimental in others. ||orz
