Megaupload, one of the internet's largest file-sharing sites, has been shut down by officials in the US.
The site's founders have been charged with violating piracy laws.
Federal prosecutors have accused it of costing copyright holders more than $500m (£320m) in lost revenue. The firm says it was diligent in responding to complaints about pirated material.
The news came a day after anti-piracy law protests, but investigators said they were ordered two weeks ago.
The US Justice Department said that Megaupload's two co-founders Kim Dotcom, formerly known as Kim Schmitz, and Mathias Ortmann were arrested in Auckland, New Zealand along with two other employees of the business at the request of US officials. It added that three other defendants were still at large.
"This action is among the largest criminal copyright cases ever brought by the United States and directly targets the misuse of a public content storage and distribution site to commit and facilitate intellectual property crime," said a statement posted on its website.
Megaupload is dead. I am not pleased.
Proof, if it was needed, why SOPA/PIPA needs to become extinct already. This was from before an official decision was made on the bills, with the legislation that they already had. If this new stuff passes, this could potentially be the fate of all filehosting websites. And that would make the internet eat dirt like it's 1869.
Ironically though, this little "demonstration" is probably going to bury SOPA/PIPA. A lot of websites used Megaupload/Megavideo/Megaporn/etc. embeds, and now every single one of them is broken. It won't take long before people realize that we could see this kind of damage all over the internet if either of those bills pass. The collective backlash will probably physically topple the senator's building. Way to go, geniouses; the wolves were already awake, now they're baying for blood.
On a lighter note: dealing the finishing blow to SOPA/PIPA is very much a possibility now. Before the mass-blackout yesterday, only 5 senators opposed it. Afterwards, that number increased sevenfold, to 35. And apparently 41 collective "no"'s are needed to stop the bill. This is the kind of progress I like to see.
Many people are going to be furious over this. Megaupload was a large site that provided streaming video to a lot of other sites. Hopefully some good will come of it and it will help topple SOPA/PIPA.

Welp, there was definitely a backlash from this - courtesy of Anonymous. They DDOS'd a large number of the government's and media industry's websites, the largest attack in their history. I told you the wolves were baying for blood.
Let's hope they didn't overdo it though: http://news.cnet.com/8301-1009_3-57362437-83/anonymous-goes-nuclear-everybody-loses/
I'm quite anxious for the headlines tomorrow.
NOTICE: For those of you who were looking into a "megavideo . bz," cease and desist. It's not a resurrected Megaupload, but rather some twat's cruel malware-attached joke judging from what I've heard. And really, how do you expect Megaupload to get back online when its admins are currently in police custody?

Well while it'd be nice if they (the feds) learned their lesson, Anon. probably should've stopped while they were ahead. Then again, obv. a lot of people are pissed off about this...
Well, this'll be interesting to hear about from my Political Science teacher tomorrow. :v

Well now a whole bunch of other sites are blocking the U.S. from downloading/filesharing.
Filesonic now refuses to let you share files, you can now only use it as an external hard drive/back up file location.
More hell to come in the following days. Boo.

Is it still too late to fund new servers in Sweden and plug into the new internet?

What would you say if Megaupload going down wasn't because of SOPA/PIPA? http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2012/01/why-the-feds-smashed-megaupload.ars
Not that I'm for Megaupload going down, but just thought you should know.
Also, FileSonic removed file sharing. You can still access the site, but you can't download uploaded files other than your own.
