I don't think you realize the bill has not a few supporters, including big corporations. It still has a decent chance of passing.

BT's right about how long this has been going on for. The PROTECT IP Bill is basically a rewording of a previous bill that was turned down. But you should know that the senators who are supporting / co-supporting this bill aren't giving a shit about the 1st Amendment. They're simply not caring that we are entitled to freedom, speech, and press, and are saying that it is within the Constitution's boundaries. Regardless of what you alone may say, the senators don't care, and whatever their vote is on the matter at hand, that's the vote given for your state. This is politics. And changing the contents of an Amendment isn't possible, but for all we know, the government may just alter it with another Amendment. But it's awful hard to put in another Amendment.

| I'm afraid it does, Cybernetic. Most of what we access on the Internet is hosted or routed from the U.S., which is where the bill will affect. It's basically a "cut off the head and the body will die" scenario.
A bill like this having the possibility to pass is hard to grasp, I understand, but that possibility is indeed present no matter how hard it is to believe.
HOWEVER.

It seems the people are smarter than the politicians. I received this in my e-mail when I signed the petition titled, "Uh oh. You woke up the Internet." Best and most apt description of the situation ever.

| @Asagi-san - The problem *is* the fact that the Reds and Blues have been going on about stuff like this for centuries. There's always one or two groups that ALWAYS butt heads...Guess that'll never change, but I can't help but hope that some day people will pull their heads out of their asses and just do whatever they can to help.
And the problem with entertainment, especially the sports industry, is half the time it isn't entertaining. Sports teams generally aren't that good (KC Chiefs being my prime example since I live in that area). And money spent =/= quality. Sure, sometimes you can spend loads of money and get loads of profit and entertainment from it, but not always. Some of the best movies I've seen happen to be the ones that have a low budget. And there's a great variety of entertainment you can find for free, and I don't just mean the "poke a rock with a stick" kind. One of the reasons I'm so against this bill is not only will it reduce the amount of free expression on the internet, it will also reduce the amount of quality writers on sites like fanfiction.net, fictionpress, mediaminer, and before Nickelodeon bought its rights Quizilla (though even before then quality was sketchy). People who write for free, just to entertain others, will lose a great past time. And I'll be stuck reading trashy romance novels my Mom bought from Good Will. Also, less lulz from Encyclopedia Dramatica. =(
@SL the Pyro - Nice signature. I need to start playing DFO again.
@BoyTitan - *hugs* Every time the government attempts to pass a law and fails, they learn what not to do (and I don't mean the "don't try again on this bill" part) and try again. And they gain more supporters that way. orz
@Nisa - Yes, throw it out the window, grab a flamethrower, and set it ablaze. Gogogo. Oh, and do the senator, too. :3c

US citizens didn't think alcohol would be banned. US citizens didn't think possession of marijuana would be criminalized. US citizens don't think their government will try to control the content of the internet. The sad thing is that the US government has already set a precedent of controlling the internet. They sent ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) to shut down several websites not too long ago. Most of the websites that were attacked by the government didn't even have copyrighted content hosted on their site; merely linked to it. Major industries (like the MPAA and RIAA) regularly send lobbyists to congress to bribe our officials into making legislative decisions in their favor. All the while no mention of this bill has been made from any national, televised news source; (which is, sadly, the primary news source for most Americans.) Most news stories, right now, are about pedophilia, murder, scandal and the Republican debates.

We'd all like to see the Democrats and the GOP reconcile for the benefit of Americans, but their views are just too different. You can't go against the fact that both have good arguments on where they stand, however. We all wish for a perfect totalitarianism where fair is fair. I personally like my football. I'm all for having the player's salaries being cut for more govt. spending, but if it makes more lockouts, then all my hate. And yes. A lot of blogs and fanfic sites will be affected by this. So much for an open medium.

| This bill has the backing of major Hollywood industries and drug companies who think that this will somehow stop copyright infringement. Keep in mind the bill states it has the right to close down user originated content, you know, like forums. Despite major resistance, with enough money laundering from major corporations, this bill may pass despite our certainty that our good 'ol USofA would never do that. | |

They may be idiots, but they're the ones who spend all day writing or thinking about something that could be for the betterment of your country. I'm not saying that every senator or official in a government does that, but some of them work their asses off attempting to do what they can to help out however they can. Take Obama for example; he's certainly not a great president, but he'll be busy each and every day, talking about what bills are going to the Senate, how relations between Pakistan are going, making a speech, etc etc. The guy doesn't have much time for what he wants to do, like even taking a simple walk in the park with his family. Life is hectic for him. Besides, " If men were angels, no government would be necessary".

| Accepting freedom meaning accepting both that you agree with AND what you don't agree with. Garapon for life or gtfo On topic: Funny how they think this will even get pass... Those politicians are certainly out of their mind. There need to be some restructuring of government. Currently all the good people won't run because it is a race where doing evil is awarded. Good people won't put their family in harms way unless out of options. Yet a system that punish "evil" might (easily) be abused... sigh, this is going to take some time. | |

| Reforming the government is possible, but only for so long. People leave and others will take their place. No person is perfect, and the world will never have a stable government for long. We're just incapable of doing so. | |

JP once try to pass bill that not allow any character under 18 to being draw or show into sexual way even you describe that character as 1,000 or 10,000 years old but if the char look like under 18 then it's illegal. the vote win by 3/5 of total disagree, agree rate. glad that one not pass. remember, sometime crazy thing that you think it will never exist, it will exist. plane and boat as example..........if you talk bout flying in Air with big ass of metal like that in past, people will said you're out of your mind.
