We may be waving good-bye to free speech on the internet soon.

http://americancensorship.org/

I for one cannot imagine the internet without free speech, and apparently some {censored!} politician is aiming to cause exactly that to be a reality.

Why. Just why.

If your country have something like a treaty with them (like we do), the USA (or any associated gov) may influence your copyright laws on their favor. It's like a domino effect. Iirc we also have one with Japan and they are also pushing their anti-piracy tendences.

I actually think that our generation, world wide, has a habit of under-reacting. Idk how up you are in America's politics in particular, but did you know that we're currently passing bills that prohibit a doctor's choice to save a woman's life as she gives birth? Or how about our "anti-bully" law that states restriction of bullying "with exception of religious or moral views"? On a less moral side, in some states (such as MI), the Governor can declare "economic crisis", and liquidate the local governing bodies, eliminating the peoples voice of entire cities or counties. There's also the Occupy Wall street movement, that is affecting global economy. It's causing media black outs (which aren't technically legal) and leading to violent ends to intentionally peaceful protests.

People don't realize their rights are being infringed upon until it already happens. It may seem like it dosn't affect you. It may seem like these things are too dystopian to be real. But, men in power like to keep it that way. And often times, it's the peasants that take the blow to keep things the way they are. Despite our history lessons, we as a race never seem to learn this.

On a more direct note, say goodby to any American based site you like to frequent if this passes. The internet is global.

Which is exactly why the things mentioned above are happening, and I can't marry due to a religious moral law. Good 'ol liberal government! [/sarcasm]

If even newyork state passed gay mirriage it wont take long till you can. Also inb4 ppl say mmas illegal heres that due to the culinary monopoly on casinos here and the fact that ufc fratitia brothers/owners run independant casinos in vegas and wont join the culinary union.

Anyways this law will never get passed.

Well, this bill obstructs our rights to the First Amendment as it gives us the liberties of freedom, speech and press (provided you live within the U.S.). We're also entitled to open medium with that, so with all this here, I don't see why the Senators in favor for this consider the bill "within the boundaries of the Constitution, and should not be considered unconstitutional".

There's also a fair amount of senators in favor of the bill, so contrary to BT, it does have a chance at being passed, although there's many companies and such that are advocating for the bill to be killed.

This is why we should be sending letters to our Senators - so that they can change their minds. But young people are seldom interested in politics.

I can't believe the government would even be wasting its time with something as pointless as this.

Focus on issues that actually matter, government. Like I dunno, making jobs for people? Feeding the homeless? Helping the economy?

The government, in my opinion, is doing this so they can gain money. The fines and such are pretty hefty if one gets caught. But it's truly a waste of time when you can get around the DNS block, like an offshore VPN proxy.

As for those issues, that's the ideal government we all want - an utopia. But politics can't just make it happen.

Making jobs for people is hard if people don't want to spend. With no spending means no business, and with no business means poor pay or no jobs at all. With that, there's not much revenue generated for the government to spend.

We can't really do much for the homeless considering the bad economy.

And as for helping the economy, with what's going on in the world, like Italy and Greece, it's not going to be great for a while.

Italy and Greece's economy have been shitty for a long time now. Hell, most eastern Europe/Middle East countries are barely even countries with the way they're run. America is just bleh with the way it's run, and it's always been bleh. People are way too self-centered, always have been, and focus on petty things instead of things that can help the country. Sure, there are things like the Project for Awesome and sites that allow you to aid people in third world countries and charities, but not enough people ever seem to donate to them.

People are fine with spending their money on stupid stuff, just look at all the money people spend on new phones, fancy gizmos like iPODs and iPADs, magical pixels, and of course our beloved garapons. But most people don't really want to be that altruistic with money towards stuff that can benefit people other than themselves. Just makes me frustrated.

And if a senator thinks this could generate money for the economy, I think he's an idiot. There are better ways to gain money than by doing something like this, especially if it infringes upon rights. Most businesses and schools block the majority of the internet, and you don't have access to any rights at school. That's fine. But you take this out of those little bubbles and into private lives? Not smart. This isn't the 1800s or so, and people aren't shy about saying what they think, in real life or on the internet. The internet may be a hellhole, but it's a good hellhole. And I want to keep watching my porn and cooing over moebots. Neutral

If the senator wants to generate more money for the country, a better way would be to make a petition for the movie industry to stop paying their actors such absurd amounts of money. Cut back on professional athlete's salaries by a few thousand dollars. Have companies like CyberStep EN or Nexon NA pay cuts of their money earned. Same for fast food chains like McDonalds, Burger King, Taco Bell. Hell, increase sales tax. I wouldn't mind paying more tax so long as the item's original sales price didn't rise too much more. Export machines to countries that are in need of more industrialization. Just...do something that isn't stupid.

I understand that no country will ever be a utopia, but damn I wish politics weren't so stupid half the time.

On another note, a Wendy's was built in my area in less than a month, hired people in less than a week, and is already pulling in a substantial amount of business. Oh, America.

Welcome to our democracy. Although I didn't mind the time when Clinton was in office.

True, there are better ways to spend your money over just buying stuff for your own purpose. But with the economy such as this, not many people are willing to spend a portion of their income to the needy.

Quote :

I think the government is just getting desperate. We're still one of the highest in terms of GDP, but we're still losing funds day by day. Millions of dollars are added to the debt clock with each click of the refresh button, and the fact that the U.S owes 15 trillion for its total debt, mostly to the businesses and such within its borders (we only owe China around 7% of our debt, contrary to what many believe, but it's more than any other country) isn't helping.

Well, look who's a Democrat. But realistically, this can't happen because you'd just put yourself in a debate that's been going on ever since the Reds and Blues stepped onto the floor. Democrats want more of those who are rich to pay more taxes, along with more taxes altogether for more government action, while Republicans want those who've earned their money to keep their money, along with less taxes.

There's also the fact that people LOVE entertainment. This is why we pay athletes millions of dollars - to give us a good show. Not paying them would mean the players getting angry, and more lockouts such as the NFL lockout. And you don't want to hear the moans of millions of people when you've taken their Monday Night Football or their Super Bowl away from them.

As for businesses, forcing them to give more of their revenue to the government would be breaking all that the U.S. stands for. We're a mixed system; although we're an Interventionist state, we also follow Laissez-Faire. And businesses LOVE Laissez-Faire.
