Setting up a 360 controller as the gamepad?

I'm pretty new to the game but so far it's a lot of fun. I know it supports gamepads but I wanted to use my xbox 360 controller. I read that you can do that and Microsoft does have drivers for it that you can download, but I can't seem to get it to work. The game doesn't recognize any of the buttons when they are pressed. I went into the game setup menu and switched to gamepad instead of keyboard/mouse. Is there something I'm missing? I sincerely appreciate any advice that anyone can offer. I can use the keyboard/mouse combo but I've always liked a controller better. Also is there anyone who is using a controller? How does using it compare to the keyboard/mouse? Does it work like it's supposed to?

Do you have the controller actually connected to your computer? Had to ask.

Yeah it's just a standard wired controller. It's hooked into one of my USB ports. I'm to broke to afford the wireless one.

Any ideas? Does anyone know how to set this up with an Xbox 360 controller?

I play with a PS2 Dual Shock, I always found the Xbox 360 the most unconfortable controller in the popular consoles in history. And not to be understimated, im in the top 100 both Arena and overall ranking and sometimes pull the N1, so it's not really a handicap.

How do you use a PS2 controller? Is there some kind of special hook up for that? Or did you mean PS3? How did you get ti to work right? Thanks for the help.

Yes Plug to USB

My control settings

L1, shoot, R1 secondary weapon

Hold L2, switch, Hold R2 Boost, Analogs to move and crosshair (with a reduced acceleration and higher sensivity to turn around).

Square for Special. Pads for items. Press X to dash and hold circle for map and Drop.

You will have the advantage of having an accurate aim and just press a button to dash or airloop/accelroll making you master the step fire fast if you use fast bots with float dash.
