I can build on what Reli stated, I main Support most of the time, so I'll provide on that.
Support is the other guy in the duo bot lane, along with the ADC. Usually tasked with the warding and protection of carries. Support's role is kinda like CB's, help the team with heals, crowd control, buffs etc. In lane, you'd want to babysit your ADC by healing him, buffing him, having a presence so that he can farm easier (not just sitting in a bush), make plays to get him fed (if possible) and to ward the surrounding area so that anyone roaming to bot lane doesn't screw you guys over.
Tips as a support
Don't take cs. This contradicts what Reli said in his post but there's a reason for it. Usually the ADC, not you, is gonna be the one dishing out damage later on, therefore, you shouldn't take the cs so that he can get his damage items and stuff faster.
Don't take kills. Other than getting verbally bashed for it, the gold gained would be better on the ADC rather than you in most cases. Of course, you should take it in various circumstances, like if you know you can get it after your ADC's dead.
WARD. Although each team member has the responsibility to ward, most of it falls on supports. Places to ward off the top of my head: the river area near dragon, tri-brush. Wards provide vision, alerting of ganks. Later on during the mid and late game, you'd want to be warding the area around objectives like Baron (worm) and Dragon. A good item for this is the Sightstone and its upgrade, Ruby Sightstone
Having a presence. Don't camp in the brush forever. If you show them who's boss by poking at them or running at them as an aggressive support (Bitchcrank, Leona, Thresh) or poking them with things like Sona, Lulu, Annie, Zyra, they'll be spooked and back off, giving your ADC more breathing room (most of the time). Of course, there's certain things to take note, like who the enemy support is. e.g. if you go too aggressive as a squishy like Sona and get caught by say, Blitzcrank, chances are, you're dead.
Protect ADC. They are squishy, but have more damage potential than you do later on. You'd want to take damage for them or help them avoid taking damage. Of course, there will always be a dumbass that takes free damage for no good reason, I suggest bearing with it and telling him not to do so.
Reli's 3rd and 4th point important, don't ignore.
EASY SUPPORT TO START WITH
Honestly, not to sure on this. Soraka's the easiest since all she does is heal, heal, heal, but in the current meta of heavy cc, she isn't really that useful with just a silence. I thought of recommending Annie, but she's kinda a one-trick pony as well since her main selling point as a support are "instant" stuns. I guess I'll use Sona as an example here, since playing her teaches proper positioning (so you don't die), her spells are easy to understand and her kit has quite a bit of utility overall. Taric is good to start with as well, but I'm biased to Sona since that's how I started
Sona Passive- Every third spell cast gives an additional effect on next autoattack and said autoattack will also do more damage. DOES NOT APPLY TO R If Q, double damage (of the AA). This is good to poke with. If W, target's damage output is reduced for 3s If E, Applies a 2s slow to the target
All of Sona's spells, except R, have a passive aura if it was the last spell cast
Q- On activation- Deals damage to 2 targets in range, prioritizing champions. Your poke skill. - Aura- Gives allies (self included) additional AP and AD within a certain range.
W- On activation- Heals nearby ally and Sona. Also gives extra MR and Armor for 3s. Prioritizes lowest health percentage ally - Aura- Gives allies (self included) bonus Armor and MR
E- On activation- Grants extra movement speed to nearby allies and self for 1.5s - Aura- Extra movespeed within certain range for allies and self
R- A 1.5s AoE stun
In lane, you'd want to poke at enemies with Q and autoattacks while making sure you yourself don't get caught. Do not all-in until level 6 (preferably). When engaging as Sona, you'd want your R to hit more than one enemy. You can use Flash to close the gap and hit enemies further away and catch them off guard. Follow engagement up with Qs and AAs. Retreating is the same thing, use R, and spam E and W. Later on when teamfights start to begin, you can still initiate, but you should almost always return to your carry to protect him.
Build wise, usually all supports build the same thing. This consists of items like Mobility or CDR boots, Ruby Sightstone. Items that have CDR/Mana regen are good too like Mikael's Cruscible (Crucible also allows to cleanse CC, very useful). Aura items like Aegis of the Legion also help the team, so get that. The jungler can get Locket too, and the passive doesn't stack, so communicate to see who should build it. Also, since you won't be farming creeps, its nice to get gold generation items like Ancient Coin, Relic Shield and Spellthief's Edge. Usually you'd want the Coin for mana and hp regen AND later on it builds into Talisman of Ascension, which gives speed boost for engagement/ disengagement. This Shield gives more HP regen than Coin, and has a passive which allows you to execute a minion and give hp and bonus gold to a nearby ally. Its final upgrade allows you to give a shield based off you current health that deals damage after 4s. Spellthief's gives AP, mana regen and when you hit an enemy or tower with an autoattack or skill, you get gold. Final upgrade applies a slow.
I think my post is getting a bit lengthy , I should stop about here. There's probably someone else here that can give better insight than me, so don't take my advice like the word of god.
@Aria congratulations
You can play support with anything that is quite tanky and/or has a lot of cc. I tend to play Annie/Lulu (fuck your nerfs riot)/Xerath/Velkoz/Lux/Morgana (spell shield op)/Maokai/Nidalee/Volibear/Nautilus/Alistar/etc. I haven't been a low leveled player for seasons but I think that Sona, whilst having nice heals and utility, is quite frail and you might end up being a liability.
About warding: jeez it's season 4 with a free ward you shouldn't put all the warding on the sup.
@Aria: Congrats Aria

Mmm, last time I checked, Morgana was being used as a counter to Leona sup because of her shield.

I'd say the same. Ganking for a bot lane with Sona is a bit difficult because she doesn't offer anything to help besides a slight movement speed increase. This changes once she hits level 6, but still.

I agree about warding, however some people's old habits die hard and say "I'm not support, I don't need to ward" and some bullshit like that.
On Sona, agreed. Annie does a better job of AoE stunning with it being almost instant and she has more damage than Sona. There's also Leona with AoE stuns and a lot tankier too. And on heals we have Taric/ Alistar and they have CC too. I don't really like Nidalee as a support since I like supports with hard CC, but I see how she can be played as a poke support with extra vision from traps

@Reli: Yeah, it's one of the main reasons people bother playing her as a support. I kind of managed while plahing sora early in season 3, but later on that became harder and harder. Pre-nerf Sona would have been pretty good now.

Well the main selling point for using velkoz, Xerath, Lux, Lulu and Nidalee as a support is that they can fill a role whilst retaining damage. Xerath has good mana sustain, which lets me have more lane presence. What I do with Xerath/Velkoz/Nidalee/Lux/Lulu, is harass. I poke the enemy, abuse their positioning, make them miss cs. The damage they can bring is quite overwhelming and the enemy adc doesn't have the time to buy magRes. I actually prefer Nidalee bot than mid, because pre lvl six she can't wave clear well, but in bot her spear hurts and her heal allows me to go 21/9/0 on her.
Other good mentions are Galio and Jana. Jana can harras pretty well and has good utility, but she's more reliant on her adc. Galio is pretty tanky and can be very annoying in teamfights.

i no longer play league of legends unless someone specifically asks me to. Now I just play league of batman.
Same here. I kind of lost interest a bit, and have been getting horrible lag lately (EUW=terror). Oh, you play IC huh? I've been into smite these days (I'm a dork for things with mythological references)

meanwhile I have no interest in comics or any idea what the hell is going on. The only comic book I ever went out of my way to read was The Punisher, but that's the wrong company and I'm pretty sure he isn't in any major recent media anyway.
I got into IC from a friend who used to play dominion a lot. I hated the mode because it was dumb but IC's version of it(apparently the main draw of the game and the only non-beta map) is actually really fun.
Because Challenger. I'll just play so I wouldn't decay(7 days before losing LP) or get kicked out because of higher ELO guys.

Syndra, Lucian or Vel'Koz.
I can't pick. Pls help.
I want an APC for mid that I actually like playing. Annie gets kinda boring and I want something besides Ahri. Missed Vel'Koz's free week, but from what I've seen so far, he seems pretty fun to play. I liked Syndra when I tried her, though it's gonna take a bit before I can play her properly.
Lucian is amazing to last hit with, feels so smooth. Was considering Jinx at first, but think Imma get him first before any other adc.
Got all the sups I want and most of the junglers, so I want some mids and adcs.

I'll just sit on my Challenger "badge" and play when I get "warned" by the system when I log in.

I wish I had the time to play during that timeframe. Then I could have bought my attack speed quints.
Spoiler:
Didn't do bad. I tried Nocturne the other day for a few games straight, but I didn't have the right mindset for Feral so I went on pretty bad tilt. Now I think I'm getting the hang of it.
Then again, this was not a ranked game. Also, no traditional ADC. That's how it goes in team builder, I guess.

What do you mean? You're more likely to get a proper ADC in Team Builder then in blind pick.
I quite like Team Builder so far. People actually get the roles they want to play and are mostly confident about what they play and know what they're doing. There are also far less ragers and trolls from my experience.

No, I think certain people will like to have fun with their bot lanes. Especially since there's premades. But yes, besides the results I posted, we've had traditional ADCs done in bot lane in all other games.

Just click away if you don't want a Zed, it's the most picked lane so you'll get a new mid in just a few seconds.
Since you can see your team before starting, you can just decline and look for a new team, or refuse someone if you're the team leader.
Personally I don't mind the extra wait time to get a proper team. Blind pick just has fights about who gets what lane the majority of the time.

I wish I saw more Zed, tbh. All I'm getting are LeBlanc and Nidalee. It gets kinda dull when you see the same champions over and over again, especially if you have to lane against them.
I also dislike having a Nidalee on my team when I'm top or jungling. Ganking her lane feels like such an useless thing to do. Most Nidalee players that I've seen lately are playing extremely safe. They'll just throw a spear, most likely miss it, and then pretend like you never ganked in the first place and continue farming in human form.
Not a big deal in Team Builder though, since I can just avoid those champions. The moment you decline one you get almost instantly a new mid laner.

Zed sounds nice compared to them, yes.
I think I'll start playing some Malphite Jungle to counter the Feral Flare jungler hype. I must confess that I've been going along with it when I play by myself in team builder, though. If I'm with my friends, I can play less selfish junglers.
