| How you think Two brothers (X and Z) were in a forest and found a butterfly trapped in a spider's web. The spider begins to approach the butterfly, but then, X reaches to save it from the spider. As X tries to save the butterfly, Z crushes the spider. X becomes angry and asks Z why he killed the spider. Z replied that because X wanted to save the butterfly from the spider. X says that he wanted both of them to live. Z, who killed the spider, then said this species of spider can only eat butterflies or they will die of starvation, so by saving the butterfly, the spider would have died anyway. Who do you think is right and why? (There is no right or wrong answer, xz just wants to see how you think (not like I'm expecting the kind of answers I've seen so far from cbff)) Put your answer and reasoning in a spoiler so you don't ruin it for others | |

both boys have a correct method of thinking , however Y did it for the wrong reason in his first argument , he argues that X is going to save the butterfly , so he killed the spider, while the spider may have died if it didn't catch any butterfly , there is a chance that it will catch, therefore the least disruptive but still "good" way to actually respond is just to release the butterfly. in the end there is no wright and wrong of the boys, there is no right or wrong in this case anyway

There are 5 possible answers Crush the spider and free the butterfly (Z's decision) Leave the spider and free the butterfly (X's decision) Leave them alone Crush the butterfly and leave the spider Crush both What xz wants to know is the reasoning behind the answer you chose

| My answer. - Spoiler:
It's not their business to deal with, so leave the spider and the butterfly alone. At least they don't have to argue that way.

Both of them are wrong. By interfering with the spider's meal, they are affecting the ecosystem. However, X would be more on the "correct" side as spiders don't die of starvation immediately.

Okay... I understand somehow their behaviour with this. Both of them aren't wrong, however, they were also interfering with the cycle of nature. But oh well...

Was a scenario I created to reveal the character of others Really No ones ever heard this,Anyones yes I heard it,Its always A hack job attempt to make the foolish brothers who trys to save the butterfly kind hearted and have a sense of justice,Will the Guy who saves the spider and kills the butter fly is made out to look cruel and enjoy torture, When in fact the anwser I mailed you is what some one who is cruel and enjoys torture would do. Best course of action would be to scold your brother for messing with nature. | |

| Nn... I think Z is more correct than X. - Spoiler:
X wanted to protect both of them. While I would think this is normally the way to go, the Natural Order does not. In order for one thing to survive, another thing must be sacrificed. It's no different from the transfer of Energy in the universe - You cannot create it, nor destroy it - In order to get more energy, you must transfer it from one source to another, sacrificing one to gain another.
Unrelated note: My "Peace and Justice ..." saying routes from this - For our team to win, we must sacrifice the other team as a loss. This type of Justice is what I strive for.

| Um... spoiler? - rant:
As a Biology major, I understand Z's concept, that stripping the food source from a predator species will eliminate or decline the species. As this is a philosophy question, we are forced to apply X's ideology to every situation, assuming that the repercussion of the spider dieing isn't referring to this one instance, but to the action of ceasing this species of spider from eating butterflies. Thus, Z killed the spider before X in order to make a point.
In terms of which choice I would choose or which is right, then yes, leaving them be is the best answer. Damaging the spider's food supply risks causing the extinction of the spider. Crushing the butterfly could lead to the spider loosing interest in its prey (and if applied to the butterfly population as a whole, a decline in butterfly numbers, thus eventual lessened food supply for the spiders). The ecosystem present has presumably been existing in this state for a sizable time. Thus, the amount of butterflies being consumed will never damage their numbers significantly, and the spider population will never exceed the aforementioned butterflies. If this were to occur, then an immediate biological shift would occur among one of the species (for example, an increase in spider mating one year would lead to more spiders, increased feasting and thus less butterflies. This would then immediately impact the ecosystem, as more spiders would starve to death the next year, leading to a greater amount of butterflies.) Ecosystems generally balance on moderation, or at least the predation and prey species have found a medium to "co-exist", in a hunter/hunted fashion. Interrupting this in any way ultimately leads to damage to both species.

I would watch the spider web up and stow away the first butterfly, then I would try to find another one to watch it all over again.
I did this in my youth and I still do to this day. I find it amusing to observe prey becoming victims to their predators. Watching a helpless thing struggle excites something inside of me.
