I posted this on Suleika's Topic, I will post it again here!
I saw this movie, Madoka Magica: Rebellion Story. And even though I am a fan of Madoka Magica, I totally hated this movie, and for multiple reasons.
The series is so much better off without this terrible movie!
I thus offer the following two theses
1. The success of the original Puella Magi Madoka Magica TV series can be explained primarily through its adherence to a number of vital principles (pacing, thematic consistency, understanding of its artistic pedigree, etc.) which, in concert, exhibit mastery over the storytelling craft. I propose that Rebellion does not achieve the same victory because it does not adhere to the principles that made the original series great.
2. I also propose that the cause for said lack of adherence is the by-product of what I will label, as inspired by Shinbou and for the lack of a better term.
Fan Response.
Rebellion, in its entirety, is colored by the creator’s reactions to how viewers perceived the original work. In-so-doing, it forgets or discards what helped generate those reactions to begin with.
To put it another way, the phenomenon of Madoka Magica was so great that it cannibalized the potency of its own sequel.
First of all, in the movie, after the deal with Kyubey and the world inside of Homura's Soul Gem, where they have these 'Nightmare Monsters' (who don't look Nightmarish at all). AND THEY DON'T ENGAGE IN SUPER EPIC BOSS BATTLES AGAINST THEM!
No, they just sing and dance around, and then the Nightmare Monsters disappear! THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE A CUTENESS + ACTION SERIES, NOT A GODDAMN NICK JR MUSICAL! YOU'RE TAKING AWAY THE EPIC ACTION!
And the songs they sing to do it are stupid, like this 'Cake Song' which is basically like "
Who could that Cake Be?" That song was so juvenile and annoying and terrible! I'd rather listen to Teen Titans Go "Waffles Song" or "Spaghetti Dance" than listen to that nerve-wrecking excuse for a song!
Then laterthey fight against Homura's Witch Form, Homulily. This is when things started to Really go downhill.
Homulily Is Supposed To Look Like This! It showed it in the Madoka Magica PSP Game! Look below and see what Homulily, Homura's Witch Form is SUPPOSED TO LOOK LIKE
However, Homulily in the movie looked nothing like that. They just changed her appearance drastically for no reason, and the new look sucks too.
Also, what's with this finding a dead Homura in the Witch Barrier with no Soul Gem and half of her head missing, when Homura IS the Witch?
Then on top of it, during the fight against Homulily, Sayaka then somehow summons her own Witch Form, Oktavia Von Seckendorff, but as a separate being to help her in the battle.
THEY AREN'T SUPPOSED TO BE ABLE TO DO THAT! The Witch Form is supposed to be a permanent and irreversible transformation that happens when they fall into despair, and now Sayaka is somehow sending her Witch Form as a separate being to help her in combat? That Makes No Sense! It also makes the Witches look more like totally separate entities, and not the transformed evil state of the Maho Shoujos.
Also, there is no point of Oktavia being here as well. As shown in the movie, her whole thing with Kyousuke has somehow been resolved in this movie. In a sense, Oktavia Von Seckendorff has essentially become a Branding Logo. If I didn't hate that Witch enough, now they have to pull crap like this!
Not to mention, how can Homulily and Oktavia even still be there, after the Witches were wiped from Existence by Goddess Madoka? The movie is already messing up its own frikkin continuity so badly!
Then next, we have this new girl who was added in, Nagisa Momoe, who happens to be the former Maho Shoujo self of the Witch, Charlotte.
First of all, Charlotte's former self was partially shown in these silhouettes in the original series. Nagisa however, looks nothing like what it was shown that she was supposed to look like in that silhouette. Look at these images below and see. Once again, totally changing the characters's appearance for no reason.
Second, Nagisa was shown to be able to somehow change into her Witch Form, Charlotte, and change back whenever she feels like it. Once again, just like Sayaka in the fight against Homulily, THEY AREN'T SUPPOSED TO BE ABLE TO DO THAT! For The Witch Form is supposed to be a permanent and irreversible evil transformation that happens when they fall into despair! Now this Nagisa Girl is just changing into her Witch form whenever she feels like it?! What The Hell?!
And not only that, but Charlotte's appearance has also been changed for no reason, and her name as well. Charlotte now has a weirder-looking face, and they now call her "Bebe," when she's supposed to be called "Charlotte!" Now not only changing the appearances for no reason, but also their names too?!
I hated Nagisa Momoe in the movie! She was so annoying and nerve-wrecking (especially when she'd sing that stupid Cake Song) and she was obviously just tacked on for no reason other than because Charlotte is such a popular Witch. She hardly proved helpful either. Heck, if she hadn't been in the movie, it would've changed Nothing!
Plus, so much stuff that was obviously done just to get the fans to be happy and shut up.
Like that part where Hitomi is turned into a Nightmare Monster. That part just Screams "
it was done just to make all the fans happy because Hitomi gets what she deserves for stealing Kyousuke from Sayaka and being a jerk!"
Or the fact that Sayaka is now alive again, she now has Kyousuke as a boyfriend, and his hands are completely healed. Obviously that was done just to make all the fans happy that she gets her boyfriend now, even though it contradicts so many things! It also renders Sayaka's whole character arc in the anime pointless and superfluous too!
I should also mention that After first act is over with the whole fake city inside of Homura's Soul Gem and the Kyubey Plan, none of this is relevant anymore. After that first act, the movie is about something completely different, and that last part is never brought up again, like it didn't happen!
That is a MAJOR PROBLEM! I must admit that I never seen a first act having nothing to do with the rest of the movie. Some argue that they were thinking outside of the box. Well as MrEnter once remarked in his Animated Atrocities reviews, "
If This Were A Testament to Anything, it's that there are times when the Box is a Good Place To Be!Finally, the thing that really made it absolutely awful.
After Homulily is killed, and Homura departs onto the afterlife, she then meets with Goddess Madoka. Then, out of the blue, Homura turns evil, somehow manages to steal Goddess Madoka's Powers and becomes Evil Goddess Homura (or more like Satan Homura), then she turns Madoka back into a normal girl and sends her home and Mind-Wipes her. After that, the new "Satan Homura" creates these new Witch-like creatures called "Wraiths," and sends them across the world, restarting the whole Witch thing with something new (which is basically a rehash of the old).
Seriously, this was the worst part of the whole movie. First of all, how the hell could an ordinary Maho Shoujo just steal the powers of a Frikkin Goddess like that? Plus, that's totally out of character, Homura is a hero, and she would never want to do that! And Homura certainly didn't have to start this thing with these Wraith Things either!
It was a huge Deus Ex Machina (or Diabolos Ex Machina) that made no sense, it rendered all the past 12 episodes pointless, and it was obviously done just to make it opened ended for more sequels, which IS NOT A GOOD REASON!!!
Not to mention, it gives a bad moral too, instead of "always keep going for your dreams" now it is "Keep going for your dreams by all means necessary until you become a Monster from it!" It also degrades her character, at first she appeared to be a creepy stalker in the show, but then became the big badass hero. Now she's once again back to the creepy stalker, except omnipotent now too!
Dear God, I think that this whole movie was just a cheaply done and terrible way of making the ending of a Closed-Ended series become Open-Ended, so that they could make sequels in a possible OVA series, or perhaps a Season Two.
SHAFT could've done something similar to this without this crap, like making an OVA or Anime about the Madoka Magica Spinoff Manga series, like Kazumi Magica, or Oriko Magica as an anime or OVA series. Why did they have to do this?!
Thankfully though, this hasn't ruined or changed anything that is going on with my Madoka Magica Fan-Manga project, "Maho Shoujo Rika Magica." I'm at least thankful for that, and I can still continue working on that project of mine.
UGH! Now I guess it's time to pretend that this movie didn't happen, like with Dragon Ball GT, or Indiana Jones and The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull, or Exorcist 2, or Highlander 2, or Hunchback of Notre Dame 2.
I still like Madoka Magica though, but I do Not Like this terrible third movie of it, Rebellion Story!!!
