It are usually the cats that fall victim here. Mostly because they won't get off chests. And when you have a couple sitting together, they start to become really obnoxious.
Though most of their deaths happen when suddenly all of them teleport to you because the chunk they're in gets loaded, and you take damage from something.
Also, about the hats. I believe it's called the hats mod, where monsters can spawn with hats on. And if you kill them, they drop the hat. There are a lot of silly hats from what I've been told.
