| Short story version for lazy readers: My cat died today. Long story version:Today my cat Duchess was acting weird. She was having trouble moving and wouldn't eat anything. My mom and I agreed to take her to the vet, but I didn't want to go because I couldn't stand to look at her moving the way she was. I sat at home for about an hour, perhaps two, waiting for my mom to return with news - Hoping that it was just a sickness. When my mom came home, Duchess wasn't with her. I asked her what the problem was, and she said, "Appearantly, her kidneys failed and her body was doing the best it could to filter out toxins without them. But the toxins built up so much in her body that it was starting to attack her internal organs, like bruises in her throat and mouth and all over her muscles. So we had to put her to sleep." I started crying immediately after I heard that last sentence. The keyboard, it's still wet too because I'm still crying as I'm typing this... I raised her from when she was just a 1 week old kitten... she was one of the only things that ever kept me company no matter what happened to me in the day. She's the reason why I would be so happy all the time... What am I going to do now? What? I can't think... I lost something I raised and nurtured for 11 years. She's in a better place though now, right? Right? | |

| I know your feelings, Astral. I lost my first pet rather horrifically. I'd grown up with him since we were both but pups, and he passed when we were both turning 14. Treasure your memories, and rest assured that your little kitty lived a good life in your care. Whatever your beliefs, I'm sure she's at peace where ever she is now. | |

I wish I could hug you through the internet too.

| Never had a long-term pet. My parents thought it would be a hassle to take care of one, and saying it'd be high maintenance. But I know that pets are a part of the family - kinda like a kid you never had.
Sorry for the loss. My respects.

| Oh no.... *huge hugs* Regardless of what you may or not believe, I, for one, am convinced Duchess is in a better place now, nyan-ing away.... I'll just leave this link here for you...: http://www.newrainbowbridge.com/NRB/rbstory.htm My 1st dog, I got when I was 8 years old...he was 8 weeks old, a Cocker Spaniel/Dachshund cross...; I literally grew up with him. He could be stubborn at times, and he weathered 3 illnesses that should have, by all rights, killed him, and a 4th instance where he outright attacked a -St. Bernard- in a misguided attempt to protect me and my front-yard...a dog more than 10 times his weight and 6 or 7 times his size.... Old age finally caught up to him in the middle of his 18th year on a warm Autumn Saturday, and we made the decision to have him put to sleep at the vet the following Monday...he didn't survive the Saturday evening, but I know he went as peacefully as possible...my parents wanted to donate him to the vet for research, but I violently opposed this in one of my very rare emotional outbursts, demanding he be buried in our backyard...to my surprise, they relented, and he was laid to rest in a quiet corner...the dogs we have had since then, and to this day even(including a Shepard/Chow/Lab cross who passed away in January aged 11), always give that corner a wide berth, as if they KNOW something is there to be respected.... You know where to find me if you wanna talk about it.... | |

| Was it specifically renal failure? The saddest part is seeing them moping around generally not being the cat you know and love. I had to go through this same thing with my cat a month and a half ago so I know how awful it feels. Just know that you gave Duchess a loving home and that's all she ever wanted from you.
I hope you feel better about this soon. <3
