Well, that's partially true. There is some research however, to suggest that certain cancers may be caused by specific viruses, free radicals, or perhaps rogue prions. The effect would be the same, since each of these little buggers essentially inserts their genetic material into yours, and convinces that particular cell to duplicate the cell itself and/or the original strand of genetic material.
