Subject: City of Heroes Freedom. (Free To Play) Sat Sep 10, 2011 7:03 am
I have played City of Heroes/Villains off and on for quite a few years now and I just figured I'd share that it's going free to play very soon. So I figured I'd write a mini archetype guide for those who are interested.
Overall a very fun game, a lot of different costume parts to play around with tons of different powers that you can use as well. Flashy animations and fairly fun combat to boot. You can even do things like have neon green fire or pitch black energy.
The basic Archetypes to the game are all being made neutral though you can still align however you'd like. The primary set is normally more powerful then the secondary (aside for corruptors or epic archetypes). The archetypes are as follows:
Spoiler:
Hero Archetypes: Overall heroes are more suited for team play, they all fill a certain roll.
Tanker - Best meat shield around. Has powers like super strength and elemental melee types. Also many defensive sets from classic invulnerability to things like shadow armor or even fire armor. Highest HP in the game. Every attack they have has a small AoE taunt.
Primary: Armor
Secondary: Melee
Scrapper - Basic melee DPS. Lots of damage fairly good survival tends to have more skill based attacks like using a katana or martial arts. Has similar armor sets to the tank but they do not give as much armor. They get passive criticals (Very few classes in this crit)
Primary: Melee
Secondary: Armor
Blaster - As the name suggests they blast things.... and well blast things, very powerful ranged DPS. Generally they use many elemental abilities or techy stuff (dual pistols assault rifles etc.). Every attack they do gives them a small damage buff for a few seconds.
Primary: Ranged DPS
Secondary: Manipulation Sets (Mix of melee and control normally)
Defender - Best support in the game, most are kind of meh solo. Uses powers like empathy (healing) radiation (debuff set ) and so on. When allies are in danger defenders use less endurance for their powers (Mana) plus when they are on small teams or solo they get a self damage buff.
Primary: Healing/Support/Debuffs
Secondary: Ranged DPS
Controller - Very good at locking down on entire groups, a lot of stuns, immobilization abilites and holds (All single and AoE). The have a passive critical control ability. (It makes any crowd control more potent)
Primary: Control
Secondary: Healing/Support/Debuffs
Villain Archetypes: Villain archetypes are generally more hybrid based characters.
Mastermind - The summoner classes of the game, very powerful when played right, steep learning curve to master one however. They have pets like Robots, Demons and Thugs. Lowest HP in the game. Pets that are close to you receive a damage/accuracy buff
Primary: Pets
Secondary: Healing/Support/Debuffs
Brute - My personal favorite class (So not biased >_>) in the game right next to tank. Brutes are tougher then scrappers but easier to kill then tankers. However they have good HP and a "fury" bar. The more you get hit and hit things the more damage you do.
Primary: Melee
Secondary: Armor
Stalker - This is your assassin class, they have the best stealth power in the game from level 1. Very low HP for a melee class but they do get some decent armor. They get very nasty crits when attacking from hidden status, and crit sometimes when not hidden.
Corruptor - Hybrid support/dps imo one of the most versatile archetypes in the game. They get the primaries of blasters and defenders, however at a lesser scale. They get an ability called Scourge which has a chance to do double damage once a target goes below 50% hp (Every 1% lowered below 50% this chance goes up)
Primary: Ranged DPS
Secondary: Healing/Support/Debuff
Dominator - Hybrid Control/DPS, they get control powers like the controller but their own type of assault set as a secondary, doms tend to do some pretty harsh damage but have the second lowest HP (Next to a mastermind). They get an ability called domination. Every time they attack a bar fills and when it reaches the top they can enter domination mode. It buffs all their crowd controls, refills the endurance bar and gives them mez protection.
Epic Archetypes: Epic archetypes used to be unlocked at level 50 (The level cap) but were lowered to level 20. Generally they are harder to use and very unique.
Kheldians: Very interesting type of epic, they can both shapeshift and get a big variety of abilities.
Warshade - The dark Kheldian, they have a lot of control/armor plus the ability to blow up bodies and stuff of that nature. The passive ability feeds off allies strength, so if there's a tanker on your team you are more resistant etc.
Primary: Control/Ranged DPS
Secondary: Self Buffs/Dark Transformations
Peacebringer - The light Kheldian, They have a lot of DPS along with minor support and decent survival. They pretty much just try to fill the gaps in a team. The ability they have is the opposite of the warshade. It becomes more powerful in the reverse of whats on your team. If a tank is on your team you do more damage etc.
Primary: Ranged DPS/Melee DPS/Minor Heals
Secondary: Self Buffs/Light Transformations
Soldiers of Arachnos: They are based off two in game mobs what makes them unique to other classes is they "evolve" at level 24, they all have good team leadership buffs.
Arachnos Soldier - They start off very weak aside for the good team buffs they get, at 24 they can evolve into either a Bane Spider (Hybrid Assassin/Ranged) or Crab Spider (Fairly good armor and they get a 4 legged back pack that spews lasers) They all get some pets and higher levels as well. They like laser and toxic weaponry.
Primary: Ranged/Melee DPS
Secondary: Buffs/Pets
Arachnos Widow - They start off more powerful then soldiers in return for having a slightly weaker defense buff. They are much more melee orientated and use things like claws and psionic attacks. At level 24 they can change into either a Fortunata (Stronger psi abilities/buffs) Or Night Widow (Hybrid assassin/various tricks)
Primary: Melee/Ranged DPS
Secondary: Buffs

The free to play model allows you do to a lot of stuff for free, plus the shop is not pay2win type of crap. The biggest two things that come to mind are being unable to use Masterminds or Controllers while being free to play (However you can purchase them for I think around 10$) You can go all the way to the level cap but you cannot use the incarnate system. When you hit 50 (It gives you bonus powers and makes you more powerful, not needed for most content though)
If you guys do decide to join my home server is infinity sub home is virtue. Lemme know if you decide to join
It should be free to play on the 20th or 21st if everything goes as planned.
