I'm very new to this game and I was wondering, a friend of mine said that in order to fully enjoy this game I would have to spend a crapton of irl money. Is it true?

Honestly, no.
Most of the people who whine about the game being RT only are the people who either get beat by the bots they sale, or have some burning desire for random new bots that will inevitably be replaced by another one in the future that they will really want as well.
I mean, sure RT will enhance the experience, but I still think it's enjoyable.

And no you don't need gold.
You can just use Seraph Crimrose and spend the time to learn how to play her properly.
It is just easier and less time consuming to buy gold and spend the rt on getting the more easily learned bots.
